The Castle
Situated on Cave Hill, Belfast Castle looks down onto the city and beyond to the coast. It’s located north of the center along Antrim Road but is still easily accessible from most Belfast hostels via any number one bus.
There has been a castle on the hill since Norman times although the present sandstone building finished in 1870 by the 3rd Marquis of Donegall is more a stately home than a military site.
City Hall
The Belfast City Hall in Donegall Square is also a familiar – and prominent – landmark in the city. Opened in 1906, it was built in typical turn-of-the-century Renaissance style when Queen Victoria gave Belfast city status and there are excellent free tours available.
Grand Opera House
The Grand Opera House was recently reopened after a £10 million ($17 million) redevelopment program. Originally opened in 1895, the contemporary building now blends its Victorian features with modern elements including a 100-seat theater and a new bar and restaurant.
There are a number of events held at the Opera House throughout the year, from plays to musicals to dramas, many of which come across from London's West End. There are also ballets, pantomimes and comedy shows hosted here, making it a great night out for travelers of all tastes and budgets!
This is the just the start of the city’s attractions and many more great sights – and much more entertainment – are offered by Belfast! Backpackers may wish to avoid some of the most tourist-orientated places for their budgets and they can ask staff at their hostel in Belfast for more top tips on where to go and what to do in the city.
Before settling down and becoming a copywriter for HostelBookers.com Paul Scottyn did a backpacking tour of the UK, he checked out a variety of the country's budget group accommodation, including a number of Belfast hostels.
