Nothing spoils a trip faster that started off great with cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms than having someone in your family get sick or hurt.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers the following tips for families to travel safely:

• Inspect your hotel room closely for potential hazards, such as sharp corners on furniture or walls, unprotected electrical outlets, or shaky balcony railings.

• Encourage children to take naps at times similar to when they nap at home.

• Make certain you pack clothes which are appropriate for the weather to ensure you family is protected and comfortable.

• Have all family members apply sunscreen and avoid extended exposure to the sun during its hottest hours: between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Re-apply every 80 minutes if in direct sun for that amount of time. Remember most sun tan lotion washes off in the water and needs to be reapplied once out of the water.

• Make certain water is safe for swimming before anyone jumps in.
• Stay away from unfamiliar animals.

• Wash hands and toys frequently with soap and hot water.

• Ear discomfort during planes climbing and descending can be prevented by providing infants with a pacifier or bottle. Older children and adults should chew gum.
